UK Government Falls Short of Urgent Action Needed

4,000 resettled Syrian refugees per year over 5 years falls short of the urgent action that is required now. And the failure to engage on an EU scheme for supporting those who reach Europe is very sad and wrong. SNP MPs will continue to challenge the UK government’s inadequate and reluctant response.

Today I asked the Prime Minister also to urgently review the scope of family reunion rules operated by the UK, as well as the procedural hurdles that make it so difficult for so many people to be reunited with refugee family members who are in the UK. For example, an 18 year old Syrian girl isolated in Lebanon, Jordan or Turkey, would not normally be eligible to join a refugee parent in the UK. This can’t be right.
