SNP Duo Concern Over NLC Job Cuts

Jamie Hepburn MSP for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth and Stuart McDonald MP for Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East have today expressed their concern following the announcement from North Lanarkshire Council that almost 1100 full-time posts could be cut in the next two years after the local authority announced a consultation into cuts of £45 million.

A report will be considered by a committee next Wednesday, which will detail the savings North Lanarkshire Council wants to find for 2016/17 and 2017/18. If approved, a consultation will run throughout November and feedback will be provided in January to Councillors before the budget is set in February.

Both Mr Hepburn and Mr McDonald have contacted North Lanarkshire Council as a matter of urgency to stress the negative impact that such severe cuts would have on local communities and employees alike and have urged the local authority to ensure that there will be no compulsory redundancies.

Commenting Stuart McDonald MP said:

“This is hugely concerning news, both for council staff and all those relying on their services. We would urge the council to look at every possible option to minimise job losses, and to avoid compulsory redundancies.

“This underlines the awful consequences of continued austerity cuts being pursued by Chancellor George Osborne, cuts that we will continue to oppose at every opportunity”.

Mr Hepburn also stated:

“With the UK Government continuing to impose draconian budget cuts which are hitting the most vulnerable members of our society and frontline services across Scotland hardest, this latest announcement will be very worrying for North Lanarkshire Council employees, their families and people across the local authority area.

“Both myself and Stuart McDonald will continue to urge the local authority to reconsider any major cuts and will stress the importance of no compulsory redundancies. Anyone in the local area who is concerned by this announcement should feel free to contact our local office too.”
