Off-patent Drugs Bill

A good number of constituents had got in touch to encourage me to remain at Westminster on Friday for a debate on the Off-patent Drugs Bill – an excellent proposal which would see cheap medicines that had gone off-patent used more consistently for new treatements.

There were excellent speeches from various different parties in support of the bill – none more so than Dr Phillipa Whitford, our Health Spokesperson. Yet the government – rather than accepting a vote on the issue – used the utterly archaic and undemocratic procedure of filibustering to kill the bill. A ridiculous way for a Parliament to operate.
