Cumbernauld South Community Growth Area Proposals

Constituency MP for Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East Stuart McDonald and Local MSP Jamie Hepburn have made a joint submission to a consultation which could see a major development created in the area south of Cumbernauld.

The proposals seek to create a Community Growth Area, a large scale planned urban expansion, to accommodate the demand for new housing and associated facilities that cannot be met in the existing communities.

The submission was made as part of a consultation on a draft Strategic Development Framework document which the Council had created setting out their ideas for the development.

In their submission the SNP duo highlighted their concerns about the lack of local housing provision, including the availability of social and affordable housing, which they hoped such a development might ease.

They stressed the need to involve local people, from community groups and businesses to schools and voluntary organisations, in this process from the earliest possible point, to ensure that their interests are served by any new development.

They also emphasised the need for thorough assessment of the impact any new development would have on existing healthcare and educational provision as well as on the local transport network and set out that all of these may require expansion should any new development be given the go ahead.

Commenting on the matter Mr McDonald MP said:

“In our submission, we were keen to stress that the whole range of local groups and organisations, who are working and volunteering to make Cumbernauld and the surrounding areas better, should be at the heart of this process.

“Any efforts to create new developments  should be mindful of the wishes and hopes of the existing communities and if the Council are to take their plans any further then they need to ensure that the local community is at the centre of shaping those plans.

“As soon as any further, more specific proposals are made public I will be giving them close scrutiny to ensure that this is the case .”

Mr Hepburn added:

“I welcome the opportunity to contribute my views on the Council’s proposals. While there has been considerable investment in new social housing by social landlords and the local authority in the area with support from the Scottish Government, it is clear that quality and affordable housing locally is still in great demand. A Community Growth Area to the south of Cumbernauld could help address that.

“This is not a planning application and we are still a long way from discussing the specifics of any development in this area.

“However it is vital that the approach taken by the Council is one which will allow for the creation of attractive and successful developments which brings with it improvements and new community facilities that will benefit the existing communities in the Cumbernauld area as well.”
