McDonald and Hepburn Welcome Studio Announcement

Constituency MP for Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East Stuart McDonald and Jamie Hepburn MSP for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth have welcomed the announcement that a significant milestone has been reached in efforts to bring a permanent TV and film studio facility to Cumbernauld.

In an update to the Scottish Parliament’s Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop confirmed a private investor is expected to submit a planning application to significantly enhance existing production facilities at Wardpark Studios to create a TV and film studio.

Plans to expand the existing Wardpark facilities, which have been used for the production of Outlander, to provide an additional 30,000 square feet across two new 50 foot-high sound stages have been the subject of detailed negotiations between its owners and the Film Studio Delivery Group (FSDG), comprising the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise and Creative Scotland.

It’s expected the planning application will be submitted to North Lanarkshire Council later this week.

Welcoming the announcement Mr McDonald said:

“I am delighted that these exciting proposals have reached a stage where the site’s owners appear to be in a position to submit a planning application.

“It is clear that a huge amount of work has been going to come to up with a workable and viable plan. This announcement marks an important step forward in what I know has been a long journey.”

Mr Hepburn said:

“I was very pleased to learn that a planning application is expected to be made later this week. This is a vital milestone in efforts to secure this studio which has the potential to be a fantastic facility and investment in the local area.

“Once that application is made it will be up to North Lanarkshire Council to assess it on its merits. Wardpark Studios owner’s decision to seek planning consent is a firm indication of their commitment to the project and to the local area.”
