Far too many of my constituents have suffered as a result of the UK Government’s cruel and punitive sanctions regime. I recently received figures from the Commons Library which show that 391 people in Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East have had their benefits sanctioned between January 2015 and June 2016.

On Friday, it was deeply frustrating to watch the UK Government deny MP’s a vote on Mhairi Black MP‘s benefits sanctions bill. This bill would have made a real difference to the lives of constituents who have been hit hardest by the UK Government’s policies.

While I am obviously disappointed that other parties chose not to back this bill, I will continue to do everything I can at Westminster to make make this deeply flawed system fairer.
