Last night the North Lanarkshire Council leader issued a statement in response to calls from PCS Cumbernauld, Jamie Hepburn MSP and me for NLC to undertake an assessment of the impact of Tory proposals to close HMRC Cumbernauld, the town’s largest employer.
I welcome the fact that an impact assessment will finally take place, after earlier correspondence had suggested the contrary.
This is progress. That said, we still need be clear that this piece of work cannot solely be about how to respond if the worst case scenario materialises and the office is closed (though of course the council is right to undertake that work). It is essential that the assessment must also be about helping to build the case as to why the office should not be closed at all. If it does that, it will be a helpful contribution to the campaign.
This is definitely not a lost cause – it’s just a few short months since the Public Accounts Committee acknowledged that there are good arguments for keeping an HMRC presence in Cumbernauld.
