Below is the latest letter Jamie Hepburn MSP and I have received from North Lanarkshire Council regarding our request for an impact assessment of the proposed closure of Cumbernauld Tax Office.
It is of course correct that the UK Government has decided to close over 100 tax offices and centralise them, but they are a long way away from being able to implement that decision. The point we are making to the council is we should all still be fighting alongside the unions and workers to change that decision and keep HMRC and good quality jobs in Cumbernauld – not simply working out what to do once they are gone.
In the meantime I am pressing the Conservative government for a response to the Public Accounts Committee Report on the HMRC estate (published back in April) – which was highly critical of the plans. I think it essential that MPs should have the opportunity to debate that report and the UK Government’s response to it.
